In 1998 he paid one third of Scotty Nguyen's tournament fee into a satellite event for the $10,000 no-limit Texas Hold'em main event. Nguyen went on to win the tournament and gave Mike the $333,333 which was a third of his winnings to repay him for fronting Scotty the cash. It wasn't until 2001 that Matusow made some serious noise at the World Series of Poker, in that year he was eliminated in 6th place. In 2004 he was one of the players ESPN choose to focus their coverage on because of his verbal attacks on the eventual winner Greg Raymer. He eventually started to use speed and claims this helped him achieve his poker abilities and enhance his play. He tried to quit in 2003 but wasn't successful and would eventually be arrested. In 2002 Mike was partying hard at a VIP booth and was introduced to an undercover narcotics agent Mike Fento. Fento got Mike involved in some money laundering and other crimes before a dealer informed Mike his friend was an undercover agent. It was to late Matusow was arrested, they gave him an ultimatum, if he would wear a wire and expose some information on a night club owner they would set him free. Mike refused fearing the sting could lead to his murder; the night club owner was supposedly linked to organized crime. "The Mouth" served 6 months in jail, during this prison time he would lose his WPT winnings ($250,000) on sports gambling. Upon his release Phil Hellmuth Jr. loaned Mike $5,000 dollars to start up a bank roll and get back into poker. Mike was eventually back on track and was doing well in the 2005 WSOP when he became depressed and suicidal, his psychiatrist blamed it on him not receiving his medication while in prison. Just recently it has been rumored that Mike Matusow lost over 2 million dollars on online poker. With all this going on he still finds a way to be a good poker player and be practically one of the best Texas Hold'em no limit tournament players in the world.
